The Best Squat-Proof Leggings

The best squat-proof leggings for most people are the Gymshark New Whitney: the brand states a thicker, squat-proof fabric, and it costs about $54. If you want pockets, the Girlfriend Collective Compressive Pocket Legging also makes the claim. For a mid-rise seamless fit, try the Gymshark Lift Seamless 2.0.
Here is the catch: "squat-proof" is a marketing claim, not a standard. Of the 20 leggings in our data, only three (from two brands) state it on the product page. Everything else on this list is chosen because owners commonly describe good coverage, and we say so where the brand stays silent.
We have not tested these. We compared brand claims, fabric weight and blend, and owner reports. Dark colors are the safest choice across the board, and two of Gymshark's own care notes warn that pale shades can turn sheer when stretched.

Our picks, in detail
Gymshark New Whitney High-Rise Leggings
- Women
- Sizes XXS–XXL (0–14)
- Rise: High
- Inseam options: Regular
- Pockets: None
- Fabric feel: Smooth
The New Whitney is the clearest squat-proof claim at the lowest price. Gymshark's page describes a thicker fabric (78% nylon, 22% elastane, 230gsm) with a ruched back, and at about $54 it costs far less than most premium pairs.
That claim comes with a caveat the brand itself prints. The care note says Haze Pink and Butter Yellow can become sheer when stretched, so the claim is not equal across colors. Pick black or a deeper shade if you squat often.
The other trade-offs are size and detail. Sizes stop at XXL (US 0 to 14), there are no pockets, and the page gives no inseam in inches.
Skip it if you need plus sizes, pockets or an exact length. Read the Whitney review for fit notes.
Gymshark Lift Seamless 2.0 Mid-Rise Leggings
- Women
- Sizes XXS–XXL (0–14)
- Rise: Mid
- Inseam options: Regular
- Pockets: None
- Fabric feel: Smooth
Not everyone wants a high waist sitting over the stomach during deep squats. The Lift Seamless 2.0 is a mid-rise that sits just below the belly button, with seamless 360-degree contouring in a 92% nylon, 8% elastane fabric. Gymshark calls the fabric thicker and squat-proof, and says it keeps you cool.
At about $64 it costs a little more than the Whitney, which buys you the lower rise and the seamless knit.
The trade-offs match the brand's family. Sizes stop at XXL (0 to 14), the page gives no inseam in inches, and the care note warns that Butter Yellow, Super Set Pink and Physical Pink can become sheer when stretched.
Skip it if you want a high waist, pockets or sizes above 14. See the full Lift Seamless 2.0 review.
Girlfriend Collective Compressive Pocket Legging
- Women
- Sizes XXS–6XL
- Rise: Ultra
- Inseam options: 23.75″, 28″, 31″
- Pockets: Side
- Fabric feel: Compressive
- Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
This is the only legging on the list that pairs a brand squat-proof claim with phone-sized pockets. Girlfriend Collective calls it squat-proof and sheer-proof, which are manufacturer claims. The fabric is 79% recycled water bottles (RPET) and 21% spandex, per the brand, in an ultra-high rise.
It is also one of the few lifting-friendly options with real size range: XXS to 6XL, with 23.75, 28 and 31 inch inseams.
The trade-offs are cost and feel. It is about $118 at full price, the brand notes it feels snug on first wear, and one recent review said compression felt weaker and the legging slid on a run. The page marks it final sale, so be sure of your size first. The brand says it runs true to size and suggests sizing down for more compression.

Fabletics Define PowerHold High-Waisted Legging
- Women
- Sizes OSFM, XXS–XXL-1X, 2X–4X
- Rise: Ultra
- Inseam options: 7/8, Regular, Tall
- Pockets: None
- Fabric feel: Compressive
- Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
Fabletics does not make an opacity claim, but it does say the waistband stays put through squats, and owners often call PowerHold squat-friendly in core colors. The fabric is 88% polyester and 12% elastane, with a power-mesh lined waistband, four-way stretch and UPF protection.
The reason to pick it is range. Sizes cover OSFM, XXS to XXL-1X and 2X to 4X, and you get 7/8, Regular and Tall lengths, so it is one of the few lifting leggings that serves plus, petite and tall shoppers.
The trade-offs: no pockets, and the membership model adds complexity. The non-member price is about $84.95, and the page showed a much lower VIP price under a limited-time offer. Fabletics' non-member return window is not stated on the membership page, which is worth checking.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise Legging
- Women
- Sizes XXS–6XL
- Rise: High
- Inseam options: 23.75″, 28″, 31″
- Pockets: None
- Fabric feel: Compressive
- Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
If you like the Girlfriend Collective fit but do not need pockets, the regular Compressive High-Rise is cheaper at about $108. The page makes no squat-proof or opacity claim, though the brand's pocket version does, and reviewers generally report good coverage. Treat this as a "likely, not promised" pick.
It offers smoothing, supportive compression, sizes XXS to 6XL and three inseams (23.75, 28 and 31 inches). The brand says the fabric is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
The trade-offs: no pockets, and some recent reviews criticize fit and fabric consistency. Returns are 30 days from ship date, and the brand deducts a $7 shipping and restocking fee from refunds, though exchanges are free.
Skip it if you want pockets or a soft, loose feel. See the high-rise review.
Alo Yoga Airlift Strength Extreme High-Waist 7/8 Legging
- Women
- Sizes XXS–L
- Rise: Ultra
- Inseam options: 7/8 (24.25–25.25)
- Pockets: None
- Fabric feel: Compressive
- Petite
Alo's page makes no squat-proof or opacity claim, but the dense Airlift knit (77% polyester, 23% elastane) is described by owners as non-sheer in dark colors. It adds an extra-high bonded waistband, and it is the most compressive legging in our data, rated 5 out of 5 for compression.
The 7/8 length (24.25 to 25.25 inches depending on size) also suits shorter legs, per the page.
It is the priciest pick at about $138. It is also very snug, some people will find it too tight, there are no pockets, and the size list in our data ends at L. The page showed an out-of-stock notice when we checked.
Skip it if you want a relaxed feel, pockets, extended sizes or a budget price. Our Airlift Strength review has the details.
Lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Tight 25"
- Women
- Sizes 0–20
- Rise: High
- Inseam options: 25″
- Pockets: Waistband
- Fabric feel: Smooth
- Plus sizes
Lululemon makes no squat-proof or opacity claim for the Wunder Train. Still, owner reviews often say it stays put during squats, and the Everlux fabric (77% nylon, 23% Lycra) has a firmer hold than Align. It also has a drawcord and a hidden waistband pocket.
Judge opacity color by color, since the brand will not do it for you.
At about $98 at full price, it costs nearly double the Gymshark options, though the page showed a much lower sale price when we checked. You pay for sizes 0 to 20, which covers plus sizes, and for the Lululemon return policy: 30 days for unworn items with tags.
The trade-offs are that it is less buttery than Align and the pocket only fits a card or key. Skip it if you want a stated squat-proof promise. Read the Wunder Train review.
How to choose squat-proof leggings
Read the claim carefully. Only a few brands state "squat-proof" on the page. Many more say nothing and rely on owners to vouch for them. A stated claim is useful, but it is still the brand's own and it rarely covers every color.
Pick a dark color. Across this list, the sheerness warnings cluster on pale shades: pink, yellow and light heathers. If you lift in good gym lighting or with a mirror, start with black or navy.
Look at fabric weight and compression. Thicker, denser knits resist stretching thin. Gymshark lists 230gsm for the Whitney; the Alo Airlift is a dense knit that owners say is opaque in dark shades. Higher compression generally holds the fabric closer to the body, though too tight can feel restrictive.
Check the waistband. A waistband that rolls or slides in a squat is a bigger complaint than sheerness for many people. The Fabletics page says its waistband stays put through squats, and drawcords (Wunder Train) help adjust the fit.
Do the stretch test at home. Pull the fabric over your hand in good light. If you can see skin tone clearly, size up or return it.
Wash with care. Fabric can wear thinner over time, which can undo opacity that was fine when new. Wash inside out, cold, and air dry if you can.
Because returns matter here, note the policies. Gymshark gives 30 days for unworn, unwashed items, and items with a final discount of 60% or more are final sale. Lululemon's window is also 30 days. See Gymshark and Lululemon for details.
How we picked
We have not tested any of these leggings. We started with the squat-proof claim as stated on each product page, then added leggings with strong compression and positive owner reports on coverage. We weighed fabric blend, rise, sizes, pockets and price, and we left out anything the brand itself says is not squat-proof. The Gymshark Everyday Seamless is a good example: the page says it is not 100% squat-proof and can sheer when stretched, so it stays off the list.
Ratings are editorial estimates from specs and review consensus. Read more on our methodology page, and see our best leggings for pockets if carrying a phone matters as much as coverage.

Frequently asked questions
What does squat-proof mean?
Squat-proof means the fabric should not turn see-through when stretched over your hips and thighs in a deep squat. There is no industry standard. It is a brand claim, so treat it as a starting point and check color-specific warnings and owner reports before you buy.
Are black leggings always squat-proof?
Not always, but they are the safest bet. Dark colors hide thinning better than pale ones, and Gymshark's own care notes flag only light shades as sheer risks. A thin or cheap knit can still show skin tone in black when stretched, so do a stretch test.
How can I check if leggings are see-through?
Put them on in good light and bend or squat in front of a mirror, ideally with a phone camera flash on. You can also stretch the fabric over your hand. If you see your skin tone clearly, the fabric is too thin for you, so size up or return them.
Does sizing up help with sheer leggings?
It can go either way. A looser fit stretches the fabric less, which usually helps opacity. But too large a size can slide or bunch. Girlfriend Collective says its leggings run true to size and suggests sizing down for more compression, so follow each brand's guidance.
Are cheap squat-proof leggings worth it?
Often, yes. A $54 Gymshark legging with a stated squat-proof claim does the job for many lifters. The trade-offs are a narrower size range (Gymshark stops at XXL) and no pockets. Compare with our best cheap leggings if budget is the main limit.
