Our Methodology

This page explains how products get onto BestFitnessWear, how we rate them, and what our finder quizzes do. We are an independent, research-based site. We have not yet tested products hands-on, and we say so.

Where our facts come from

  1. Official brand pages first. Price, fabric percentages, sizes, inseams, widths, pockets, support level and brand claims come from the brand's own product pages wherever possible.
  2. Reputable retailers second. When a brand does not publish a detail, we may use a major retailer's listing.
  3. Independent measurements for shoes. For specs a brand may not publish, such as weight, stack height or drop, we may use published lab data from respected shoe reviewers. We cite the source in our records.
  4. Review consensus. We read owner reviews, brand-page reviews and independent reviewer write-ups to understand fit, comfort and durability patterns. We summarize patterns, not single opinions, and we describe them as "owners often say".

Every product and brand record has a "date checked." Prices change often, so we state them as approximate and often on sale.

What we do not do

  • We do not claim to have worn, run in or tested products.
  • We do not invent people, quotes or statistics.
  • We do not make medical claims. For foot pain, we say shoes may help comfort and recommend seeing a podiatrist if pain persists.
  • We do not call a brand sustainable in our own voice. We say "the brand says" and name the source.
  • If a detail could not be verified, we say so, and we may leave it out.

Editorial ratings

Each product gets four ratings from 1 to 5: comfort, performance, durability and value. These are editorial estimates, not lab scores. They are based on:

  • Specs such as fabric, compression, support level, stack height or weight.
  • Review consensus, including recurring praise and complaints.
  • Price relative to similar products.

Because these ratings come from research and not testing, they carry more uncertainty than a hands-on score, particularly for durability. We treat them as a guide for comparing similar products, not as a precise measurement.

Every review also lists pros, cons, a "best for" and a "skip it if". We do not publish a product with no trade-off.

How best-of lists are built

We start from the products in our database that fit the list's topic, weigh the editorial ratings, and favor products that suit a clear type of shopper. We try to include a spread of prices, and we flag the trade-off for each pick. Lists note which products make explicit claims, such as squat-proof, and label them as brand claims.

How the finder quizzes work

Each finder asks a handful of questions about activity, fit, feel and budget. The quiz then filters out products that fail a hard requirement, for example a size range or a pocket type you said you needed, and ranks what is left by how closely its attributes match your answers. The result is a short list with a note on why each product fits.

The quizzes are only as good as our data. If a product's attribute is unknown, we do not guess.

Payments and rankings

We do not accept payment for rankings, ratings or inclusion. Brands cannot buy a better score. Some links on the site are affiliate links, which may earn us a commission when you buy. Commissions do not affect our ratings. Read the affiliate disclosure.

Updates and corrections

We review pages when prices, models or policies change and update the "date checked." Model names change each year, so we try to keep pages current. If you find an error, please contact us.

What is coming

We plan to add hands-on testing for some products. When we do, those pages will say so clearly, and the research-based pages will stay labeled as such. Learn more about us.
