How to choose walking shoes

Walking is lower impact than running, so the priorities shift toward comfort over hours, support and room for your toes.

Cushion: soft, balanced or firm

Soft cushioning feels plush underfoot and suits long walks and hard floors. The Ghost Max 3 is the soft option here, with a stack of 39 mm at the heel. The HOKA Transport 2 is balanced, and the New Balance 877v1 is listed as firm. Firmer shoes feel more grounded and stable, but may feel less forgiving on concrete. Which feels best is personal, so check return policies.

Support and stability

Stability shoes add features that guide your foot and resist excess side-to-side movement. The Addiction Walker 2 is the stability walking shoe in this set. If you want a neutral feel, the Ghost Max 3 and Transport 2 are neutral. If you have flat feet, see the best walking shoes for flat feet. Shoes can help with comfort, but see a podiatrist for persistent foot pain.

Width and fit

Width matters more than most people expect. The Addiction Walker 2 comes in 1B (narrow), 1D (medium), 2E (wide) and 4E (extra wide) in men's. The Transport 2 lists D and 2E. The New Balance 877v1 lists regular, wide and extra wide, and the Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit 2 lists regular and 4E. Leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe, and shop at the end of the day when your feet are largest.

Weight and drop

The Addiction Walker 2 is the heaviest here at 411 g, followed by the 877v1 at 374 g and the Transport 2 at 312 g. Drop ranges from 5 mm (Transport 2) to 12 mm (Addiction Walker and 877v1). Higher drop may feel more traditional for some walkers. Read our drop explainer for more.

Walking vs running shoes

Running shoes can work well for walking, and many carry walking tags in our data. The HOKA Bondi 9, HOKA Clifton 11 and On Cloudrunner 3 are examples. They are typically lighter and more flexible than classic walkers, but some owners say the softer foams wear faster on pavement. See the running shoes hub for more.

Price

Dedicated walking shoes here list from about $100 to $160. The Skechers Arch Fit 2 lists at about $99.95 and is an easy slip-on option. Compare retailer prices before buying, since last season's colors are often discounted.

Quick matches by walking style

These pairings follow each brand's own use label and the specs in our data, not wear-testing.

  • Standing or walking all day: the Addiction Walker 2 and Ghost Max 3 both carry standing-all-day tags.
  • Commuting and travel: the Transport 2 and the Skechers Arch Fit 2 are both tagged for travel.
  • Budget: the New Balance 877v1 (about $100) and Skechers Arch Fit 2 (about $99.95) are the two lowest-priced walkers.
  • Wide feet: all five offer some wide option. The Addiction Walker 2 offers the most widths, New Balance offers wide and extra-wide, and Skechers offers 4E.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is assuming sizing carries across brands. Half-sizes and width labels (D, 2E, 4E) vary, so read each brand's guide.

Another is choosing the softest shoe by default. Soft is not always better. Very soft midsoles can feel unstable to some walkers, while firm shoes can feel harsh on concrete. It comes down to your feet and the surfaces you walk on.

Finally, you do not have to buy a pair marketed as a "walking" shoe. Many walkers choose cushioned road-running models, and many runners choose walking shoes for recovery days. Think about what is comfortable for your feet, and check the return window so you can swap if you need to.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good walking shoe?

A good walking shoe fits your foot width, cushions hard surfaces and feels stable. Beyond that, personal preference rules, so try shoes at the end of the day, when your feet are largest, and keep the return window in mind so you can swap them if needed.

Can I wear running shoes for walking?

Yes, many people do. Running shoes are usually lighter and more cushioned than classic walking shoes. The trade-off, as some owners report, is that soft foam can wear sooner on pavement. Models like the Bondi 9, Clifton 11 and Cloudrunner 3 are often chosen for walking.

How much cushioning do I need for walking?

It depends on surface and distance. Long days on concrete or tile often feel better with softer cushioning, such as the Ghost Max 3. Shorter walks may feel fine in a firmer shoe. If your feet ache, shoes may help with comfort, but see a podiatrist for persistent pain.

What width should I buy?

Choose the width that lets your toes spread without your foot sliding. Many walking shoes come in wide or extra-wide, such as the Addiction Walker 2 and New Balance 877v1. If your shoe feels tight across the ball of the foot, try a wider size before a longer one.

How often should I replace walking shoes?

Walking shoes tend to last a long time, but cushioning breaks down with use. Replace them when the midsole feels flat, the outsole is worn smooth or your feet feel more tired than usual. Brands do not give one fixed mileage, so go by feel.
