How to Tell If Leggings Are Squat-Proof

To tell if your leggings are squat-proof, put them on in a bright room, bend into a deep squat or forward fold in front of a mirror, and look for skin tone or underwear lines showing through the fabric at the seat and thighs. If the fabric stays opaque while stretched, they pass. A phone camera with the flash on is a fast way to check from behind.
"Squat-proof" has no official standard. It is a marketing term, so the only reliable test is checking the actual pair in the actual color. This guide gives you a simple stretch-and-light test you can do at home, explains why some fabrics fail and others do not, and shows which brands make the claim in writing.
We have not tested these leggings ourselves. The product notes below come from brand pages and what owners commonly report, so treat them as a guide for shortlisting, not a guarantee.

The at-home test (five minutes)
Do this before you remove tags, and only try on what the return policy allows. Many brands require leggings to be unworn and unwashed, so wear clean underwear and keep the tags on.
- Pick bright, even light. Daylight near a window or a bathroom with strong overhead light shows sheerness better than a dim bedroom.
- Wear a contrasting pair of underwear. A light pair under dark leggings, or a dark pair under light leggings, makes any show-through obvious.
- Do the squat. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and drop into a deep squat in front of a mirror. Check the seat, the backs of the thighs and the crotch seam.
- Do a forward fold. Bend at the hips with legs straight. This stretches the fabric over the seat more than a squat does.
- Try a lunge and a high knee. These stretch the front of the hip and thighs.
- Use your phone. Turn the flash on, stand with your back to a mirror or ask someone to take a photo of the seat while you squat. Cameras with flash reveal thin spots that the eye can miss.
- Check the stretch pull. Pinch the fabric at the seat and stretch it with your hands. If you can clearly see the color of your skin or your fingers through it, it will probably thin the same way on your body.
- Check the waistband and seams. Seams and doubled waistbands can show lines or look different when stretched.
If anything shows through in a squat or a forward fold, it fails. Some people accept slight thinning in a dark legging; others do not. Decide your own tolerance.
What makes a legging squat-proof (or not)
You cannot confirm opacity from the tag alone, but a few features usually help.
Fabric weight and density
A thicker, denser knit has less gap between the loops, so less of what is underneath can show when it stretches. Compressive fabrics like the Girlfriend Collective Compressive tend to be dense. Thin, ultra-soft fabrics can feel lovely but are more likely to thin out across the hips. Most pages do not list weight, so look for words such as "thicker", "squat-proof", or "non-sheer".
Knit and construction
Smooth knits stretch evenly, which can be good, but knitted-in zones can also thin where they stretch most. Flat-seam cut-and-sew leggings often use a double layer at the seat or a gusset to help coverage. Owners' reviews are the best place to learn how a specific construction behaves.
Fiber content
Higher elastane percentages mean more stretch, which can mean more thinning at full stretch. That is not a rule: a fabric can be both stretchy and opaque if it is dense. Use content as a hint, not a verdict.
Color
Dark colors such as black and navy hide the most. Light shades and pastels are the common culprits. Gymshark's own care notes warn that Butter Yellow, Super Set Pink and Physical Pink can become sheer when stretched on the Lift Smooth, per its page. Lululemon's Align fabric is described by owners as fine in black and darker colors but possibly thin in lighter shades.
Fit and size
Leggings stretch more over larger hips and thighs, and a size that is too small stretches the fabric more than it was designed to. Sizing up if you are between sizes can improve coverage. Equally, a too-loose pair may wrinkle at the crotch and show lines.
What brands actually claim
Most brands stay silent. In our product data, only a few leggings make an explicit squat-proof claim.
- Gymshark Lift Smooth 2.0: the page says "thicker, squat-proof fabric", with the care-note warning on certain light colors. About $64 at list.
- Gymshark New Whitney: carries a squat-proof claim as well. About $54.
- Girlfriend Collective Compressive Pocket: the brand describes it as squat-proof and sheer-proof. These are manufacturer claims. A recent review noted weaker compression, so read the newest feedback.
- Gymshark Everyday Smooth: by contrast, this one is marked as not squat-proof in our data, so do not buy it for lifting.
Many premium legging pages say nothing. The Lululemon Align markets itself for low-impact activity and makes no opacity claim. The Lululemon Wunder Train has no squat-proof claim in its copy, though owner reviews often say it stays opaque in squats. Vuori's Daily Legging is called its highest-coverage fabric with "smoothing coverage" but makes no explicit opacity claim. The Alo Airlift Strength is a dense, compressive knit that owners describe as non-sheer in dark colors.
Silence is not a failure. It just means you have to do the test yourself.
Red flags before you buy
- Reviews that mention "see-through", "sheer" or "thin" with the specific color you want.
- Very light or pastel shades from a soft, thin fabric.
- Product photos that show the legging stretched in a squat and look uneven.
- A budget price on a very soft fabric. Not always bad, but check. The CRZ Yoga Butterluxe is a popular Align alternative that reviewers often say is thin and can show through in light colors.
Use the review filter to sort by lowest ratings and search for "sheer" and "see through".
If your leggings fail the test
- Return them if they are unworn and within the window. Vuori allows 120 days and Alo, Lululemon and Gymshark 30. See our activewear return policies guide.
- Wear a nude or color-matched pair of underwear to reduce visible lines.
- Size up if you are between sizes, since a looser stretch means less thinning.
- Switch to a darker shade next time.
- Layer a longer top or shorts over them for the gym.
Care keeps opacity longer
Washing in hot water, drying on high heat and fabric softeners can wear down elastic fibers, which may make fabric thinner and less supportive over time. Our guide to washing workout clothes covers care. Friction against rough surfaces can also cause pilling and thin spots, a common complaint on very soft fabrics.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my leggings are squat-proof?
Wear them in bright light with contrasting underwear, then do a deep squat and a forward fold in front of a mirror. Check the seat and thighs for skin tone or lines. A phone camera with the flash on can reveal thin spots. If anything shows when stretched, they are not reliably squat-proof for you.
Are black leggings always squat-proof?
Not always, but black and other dark colors hide more than light shades. A thin fabric can still look sheer in black under bright light. Do the stretch test on the actual pair, since fabric thickness matters as much as color.
What fabric is squat-proof?
Dense, thicker knits with a high stretch recovery tend to hold opacity best. Compressive blends of nylon or polyester with elastane are common. There is no guaranteed fiber mix, so rely on explicit brand claims, owner reviews for your color, and your own test.
Does sizing up make leggings less see-through?
It can. Fabric that is stretched tightly over your hips thins out, so a size that fits without over-stretching often gives better coverage. Do not size up so far that fit and support suffer, and check the brand's size chart and reviews first.
Which brands say their leggings are squat-proof?
Among the leggings we cover, Gymshark states it for the Lift Smooth and New Whitney, and Girlfriend Collective for its Compressive Pocket legging. These are brand claims, not independent test results, and some light colors carry warnings. Always run the home test.
